Noriyuki Haga suffers fractured vertebra

2009 World Superbike Championship leader Noriyuki Haga has been airlifted to Derby hospital with a fractured vertebra - plus other injuries - after his violent race two crash at Donington Park on Sunday.

Haga fell heavily at Coppice, the fast right-hander which leads onto the back straight, on lap five of the second race, shortly after moving into second position behind double Donington winner, and title rival, Ben Spies.

In a near identical accident to that suffered at the same turn by Ducati Xerox predecessor Troy Bayliss in 2007, the Japanese was thrown from his 1198 as he applied the power and then hit several times by his bike as he tumbled to a halt.

Haga, third in race one, eventually walked away with the support of marshals but was then airlifted to hospital.

"Haga was victim of a serious crash in which he has suffered a fracture of one of the spinal vertebrae," read a Ducati statement.

"He was immediately transferred to the track's medical centre where the doctors declared a fracture of one of his vertebrae.

"At this point it was decided to move him by helicopter to Derby hospital where he will receive further medical attention."

Spies is now just 14 points behind Haga after round nine of 14. The next event takes place at Brno on July 26-28 but Haga's attendance is in serious doubt.

alez... het ziet er alweer iets beter uit volgens kropotkin (motoGP matters website)

Initial reports indicated that the Japanese rider had indeed suffered a fractured vertebra, and would be out for at least 2 to 3 months.

A CAT scan later revealed more promising results. The scan did not find any indication of recent fractured vertebrae, meaning that the worst of the danger has probably passed for Haga. However, the scan confirmed the results of earlier examinations, which showed that Haga had fractured his left shoulder blade and broken his right ulna, one of the two long bones in the forearm. Haga is due to have surgery to fix the broken arm, while the fractured shoulder blade is still being examined at the time of

en volgens superbikeplanet:

Knowledgeable sources say that Ducati Corse rider Nori Haga has been examined by a specialist in the UK and the the vertebra damage in his back is actually from an old injury. Haga will see a neurologist in the morning.

Focus now moves to Haga's badly broken wrist and shoulder injury.

edit: maandagmorgen volgens world.sbk

Noriyuki HagaGood news has emerged from the Derby Royal Infirmary regarding the condition of Ducati Xerox rider Noriyuki Haga. A further CT scan on the Japanese rider revealed that what were thought to be fractures of the T8 and T9 vertebrae could actually be the remains of a previous incident. This immediately brought a halt to the scheduled operation.

"This is good news" declared team manager Davide Tardozzi, "but of course it needs to be confirmed tomorrow, Monday. Nori will for sure undergo an operation on the ulna bone of his right forearm, because it is a displaced fracture and there is also a suspected fracture of the scapula (shoulder blade) bone. It is clear however that if he really doesn't need to have an operation to the vertebrae he could get away with a month's rest".

Haga's condition less serious than expected

Monday, 29 June 2009 14:48

Noriyuki Haga was transported to the Emergency department of Derby City Hospital by helicopter at about 5pm yesterday afternoon, after having been victim of a massive high-side during Race 2 at Donington Park. The Japanese rider, accompanied by doctors from the Clinica Mobile, was seen by Doctor Rajan and once extensive tests and an urgent CAT scan were carried out, Dr. Rajan declared that the fracture to one of the vertebrae that had shown up on the X-ray taken at the circuit's Medical Centre was actually a very old fracture and must have been caused during another much earlier incident, years previously. This fracture has, over time, sealed without medical intervention and doesn't present a problem.

After a stable night in the Pre-Op assessment ward of Derby City Hospital, Noriyuki Haga will undergo surgery this afternoon to insert a plate and screws in his right forearm, to set a fracture to the right ulna. He is continuing to experience pain in the left shoulder blade, and so although no serious damage has yet been detected, doctors will investigate further to understand the cause of the pain.

The only injury needing immediate treatment at this time is the broken ulna. If the surgery is deemed a success, and there are no complications regarding his shoulder blade, Noriyuki should be able to return home to Italy in the next two days and the Ducati Xerox Team does not currently exclude the possibility of Noriyuki's return to the track in time for the next round in the Czech Republic, on the 26th July at Brno.

Go Nori !!!!!

Surgery a success, Haga will return to Italy today

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:14

At 5pm this afternoon Ducati Xerox rider Noriyuki Haga underwent successful surgery at the Derby City Hospital. Having fractured the ulna in his right arm in Sunday's crash at Donington Park, Noriyuki today had a plate and screws inserted to set the bone. The surgical team deemed the surgery a success and there were no unforeseen complications.

Prior to the operation, medical staff took a closer look at his right shoulder blade and an x-ray unfortunately confirmed that he has multiple fractures to his left scapula. The scapula will not necessitate surgical intervention and the bone should knit itself back together in time; this complication should not prolong Noriyuki's recovery time. The Japanese rider should be discharged from hospital today and he and his family will fly back to Italy so that Noriyuki can begin the necessary physiotherapy treatment.

The Ducati Xerox rider will not participate in the next tests at Imola but it is foreseen that he will compete in the next round at Brno.
